Bingley Ladies on the Fells and Cross Country – Feb – Apr 2018

I may not have caught all the results and there are definitely a few – Guiseley Gallop, Blacko (Junior) and Three Peaks  – that aren’t included yet .  If you would like to send me your report of events that would be great and would really help get things out quickly.  This is a Senior ladies report but I pick up some of the older Junior ladies results as they start to join in with Senior events .  Thanks.  Becky Weight, Ladies Fell Team Manager

Yorkshire Veterans AA Cross Country Championships, Cleckheaton, Sun 4 Mar 18

Caroline Francis flew the Bingley ladies flag alone, with a combination of weather (Beast from the East), ill health, injury and other events keeping other ladies away.  The ladies (and Men V70+) race was 5.7km;  Caroline (F50) was 31st overall in 27.52, just a few seconds behind Bingley’s Peter Ellerton (M70) and in great 6th place out of 15 F50 runners.

New Record for Victoria at Edale Skyline AL 34km 1373m Sun 11 Mar 18

413 runners started in the first English Fell Championship (EFC) race of 2018.  The weather was good  – 5-10C, dry, high broken cloud, and a light breeze on tops, but wet and muddy underfoot after heavy rain on the Saturday.

Victoria wasn’t deterred by the mud and was first female (and 28th overall) in a new record time under 3 hours, clearing Sally Newman’s record from 2000 by 10 minutes.   Denise had a good run finishing  46th female and myself (Becky Weight) 71st  (2nd FV60) out of 98.  Both Denise & I were surprised how hard the race felt.  I was still recovering from a bad cough / sickness bug which had stopped me running for 2 weeks prior to the race – that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it!  Also great to get a ladies team out at such a tough race early in the season – many thanks to Vic & Denise.   Our efforts earned us 5th place Ladies team in the first counter for the 2018 EFC

Lesley Watson had a great run to collect the British F45 bronze medal in 24.20.  She was 16th lady overall against the winning ladies time of 22.12

Todd Cragg (Ambleside) Junior Races  – Sun 25 Mar 18

Emily Field (GU19) had a great start to her fell season with an English Fell Championship win at Todd Cragg.  I can’t spot the race distance or ascent but from the map it looks to be around 4.5km with around 200m ascent.  Emily’s race time was 21.42.

Anniversary Waltz (AM, 18.5km, 1100m) & Teenager with Altitude (AL, 24.7km, 2300m) Sat 21 Apr 18

Posted as the last running of these ‘commemorative’ races so a few Bingley Harriers could not resist the pull of these challenging races from the Newlands Valley in the Lake District.

Rachael  Sharples (F50) ran the Anniversary Waltz with husband Paul in a field of nearly 500 runners  (376th Paul Sharples 3:01:06; 377th Rachel Sharples 3:01:08).  Well done Rachael.  The race was won by Sam Stead, Keswick in 1:40:04, and 33rd and 1st Lady was Kelli Roberts, Helm Hill in 1:59:05.
Denise Wright and Dave Stephenson opted for the Teenager and joined over 250 runners for this tougher race.  Dave (M50) was 75th in 3:52:38 and Denise (F40) 196th 4:49:52, both respectably mid-placed in their categories .  Familiar names  topped the results – 1st Rob Jebb, Helm Hill in 2:46:54, and 17th and 1st Lady Sharon Taylor, Helm Hill in 3:22:18

Denise commented a few days after the race  “I clocked 16.6m and I don’t think I went the wrong way!   It was soooo hard and blisteringly hot! Absolutely fab route and the views were amazing. Two brutally steep descents and it was a major slog from the bottom of Newland Beck up to the summit of Robinson – thought it would never end!  Definitely great prep for Buttermere.  My legs are still trashed so I need to get some hard hill training (up and down) sessions in between now and Buttermere!! “
