Bingley Ladies (and a few guys as well!) on the Fells, XC and Off-Road – Spring 2019

Dave Stephenson has been busy keeping the Fell Championship results up to date – thanks Dave but I haven’t done any other fell news for ages so here is a potted selection of Spring races (Bingley Harriers Fell Championship Races marked with an asterisk*) and other fell activity I have noticed.

A Summer report is in the making – if you have any news about races you have done or if you are aware of anything I have missed please let me (Becky Weight) know.

CXM Sierra Blanca Trail Race 8m 2852’.   Near or on 9 Feb 2019

While the rest of us were crossing the Pennines for the Windy Hill Fell Race (BH Champs), Sally Robinson and Bill Belcher were sunning themselves in the Sierra Blanca (Andalusia) after a tough mountain trail race.  Sally admitted to ‘feeling exhausted… Toughest race I’ve done. Body’s battered from terrain rather than speed’ .  Photo from Sally  – I guess someone else must have taken it!

10 Harriers crossed the Pennines for the first Bingley Harriers Fell Championship race.  The week before a few of us had a great recce in bright snowy conditions but the snow had gone by race day and it was cool & cloudy for the 239 runners on the start line.

Ruth was 2nd lady (37th overall) and Nicola 4th  (46 overall).  Ruth, Nicola and myself made up the winning Ladies team, while Kate, Jo & Michelle were 3rd Ladies team.  In the age categories Ruth was 1F45, Simon 2M55, Becky 1F60, Kate 3F40 and Harry 1M65

Robbie & Ruth were second Mixed Pair with Andy Gibbons and running partner Carole Morgan third. Ruth was second Female.  Ruth commented that ‘this is only the second time I’ve worn a waterproof for the whole race and I’ve been racing a long time!’  I think the two Woodentops photos must have been taken in the only sunny parts of the race!

Lancaster Duathlon  5k off-road run, 20k road bike, 5k off-road run Sun 17 Mar 2019

Sally Robinson’s note says 24k on the bike so measurements may be a little out – but they all raced the same.  Bill Belcher, Lesley Watson and Dave Stephenson went to give their run / bike legs a Spring try out.  Lesley obviously had plenty of spring in her legs and was first lady home, even though she had done a 5k XC the day before!  The winning man was 1:24 and lady (Lesley) 1.49; Lesley was one of only 3 ladies to come in under two hours.  Photo by Sally Robinson.

Three Peaks Fell Race AL 37.4km 1608m Sat 27 April 2019

Always a popular Bingley Harriers event with 23 entered, probably a similar number (or more?) involved with race organisation and marshalling, plus partners, friends and family out to support and enjoy a day in the Yorkshire Dales.   19+ made the start line of 750, including 5 ‘newcomers’  Alistair Jewsbury, Vicki Merrick, Shona Stone, Ben Costello and Joanne Henry; some had recced the course while others were relying on other fell experience and being ‘in amongst a big field of runners’.  They all had great runs and were able to put their pre-event nerves behind them.  The ‘+’  was Phil Hawkswell’s ashes carried by Ruth Thackray who was helping fulfil Phil’s long held ambition to ‘run the Three Peaks race’.  The Bingley results are below :

Name Category Position Time
Ian Holmes M50 15 3.10.41
Victoria Wilkinson W40 26 3.20.01
Tom Gomersall M 76 3.43.44
Ruth Thackray W40 133 3.56.58
Ian Ferguson M50 145 3.59.40
Paul Mitchell M50 157 4.01.57
J Robert Williams M40 175 4.04.49
Alastair Jewsbury M 247 4.15.56
Dave Stephenson M50 254 4.16.31
Shona Stone W40 456 4.45.54
Carl Hitchens M50 461 4.46.21
John Merrick M50 490 4.50.02
Victoria Merrick WU25 490 4.50.02
Andrew Nicoll M40 491 4.50.07
William Duggan M50 551 4.58.52
Ben Costello MU25 569 5.02.28
Joanne Henry W40 615 5.14.16

Oliver Cheyne was having a good run and clocked in on the top of Whernside at 2.28 but gave up his race to support  another runner who had concussion after a fall on the top of Whernside.  Well done Oliver – the race will be there next year.

Ian Holmes was our first finisher in 15th place and 1st M50, and Victoria W was 26th overall and 1st Woman (for the fourth time) in 3.20.01 and she picked up the Womens prizes for the fastest ascent of Pen y Ghent and the fastest descent from Ingleborough.  Tom Gomersal  took the award for being the first Scout to finish and Victoria M for being the Youngest Female Finisher.

The Ladies (Victoria, Ruth and Shona) and our M50’s (Ian H, Ian F and Paul) won team prizes, and the Men’s team (IH, TG, IF, PM) were 10th.

Lots of great photos on the Woodentops site http://www.woodentops.org.uk/index.php?topic=home&subtopic=morephotos

Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Coast Half Marathon  19 May 2019

Jenine McCutcheon had a great run to come 3rd Lady in 1.57 on her first off-road race on this scenic and hilly off-road half marathon starting at Ravenscar and taking in the coastal path, sea cliffs, woods and disused railway.    Jenine found the route ‘really well marked and marshalled by the MR folks!’.  Photo from Jenine.
