Conditions at Lightwater Valley were as benign as any of us could remember, and our small band of dedicated runners produced the best results in my time as Team Manager: four of our juniors gained selection to the Yorkshire team and another is a reserve, our U15 Boys team, who have performed brilliantly all season, won bronze medals, and our U20 Men’s team put the icing on the cake with a magnificent team win.
In the U13 Girls Martha Jackson, who has one more year in this age-group, ran superbly to finish in 2ndplace, while Rebecca Flaherty continued her splendid form to finish in the bronze-medal position. Holly Walters improved once again and her 48th place ensured the team finished 4th.
Our only representative in the U13 Boys race was Theo Armitage, who will have two more years in the same age-group, so his 70thplace was a commendable effort.
The U15 Boys’ team has been very consistent throughout, and their 3rdplace was very well deserved. Alex Flaherty, still recovering from a broken toe, finished an admirable 7th, Ben Rees 19th and Theo Clay 27th, ably supported by Samuel Mantle and Joseph Smith.
Unfortunately, we were not able to put out teams in the two U17 races, but we did have some success on the individual front. Emily Field, who has run splendidly all season, was rewarded with a Yorkshire place by finishing 5th, and Ruby Firth was once again so close to making the Yorkshire team in 12thposition. Charlie McVay, making his racing debut for the club, was our sole representative in the Boys’ race.
Junior Men and Women are not really part of my remit, but it was a real pleasure to see our young men running so well and achieving the club’s first team victory at these championships for many a year: Reuben Mantle’s 7thplace earned him a reserve spot for the county team, while James Askew and Josh Spencer, 12thand 15threspectively, can be very proud of their achievements.
