West Yorkshire XC Race 2 (and 1) – Seniors Report – Huddersfield, Sat 31 Oct 2015

Bingley seniors made a stronger showing at Race 2, in comparison to the Race 1 weekend which clashed with the Northern Cross Country, and British Fell, Relay races.  The weather was warm & still and some rain in the week before meant some sections were very soft and soon muddy.

The men’s team (6 to count) were 4th of 12  with 246 points.  Ben Marriot (4th, 34.06) had a close race with Matt Lockyer and Joshua Norman of Pudsey & Bramley,  in a race won by Tom Adams of Ilkley (32.37).  Andy Brown (11), Ged Callan (20), Stewart Macdonald (36), Graham Watson(39.04) and Mark Westman (121) were also team counters with Peter Ellerton (123), Wayne King-Farlowe (124), Jason Beckett (128) and Dave Potter (136) providing strong support.   In Race 1 at Wakefield the men were 10th of 14 teams with 445 points with team counters Ged Callan (19), Martin Peace (40), Stewart Macdonald (45), Will Duggan (96), Dave Potter (108) and Peter Ellerton (137).  Jason Beckett, Neil Robson and Phil Hawkswell also ran helping to ensure a team outing.   Wayne, Jason and Phil were new to cross country;  Wayne is now in the market for some off road shoes or spikes! Dave P was struggling towards the end after striding out down a steep bank ‘refreshed’ a thigh pull from a few weeks before.

The ladies team (4 to count) were 6th of 13 teams with Sue Becconsall our first Bingley finisher in 17th  of 98 (24.44) in a race won by Katie Walshaw of Holmfirth in 21.33.  Lesley Watson (30), Sarah Dewhirst (35) and Marisol Carerra-Vivar (43) made up the team with Becky Weight (47) and Sue Fulton (71) racing also.  In Race 1 Sue B. (27) and Marisol (46) ‘flew the Bingley ladies flag.’   Sue B, who has been guarding her back, was happy with her run – the soft underfoot helped – maybe the Nationals are still a possibility!  And we were pleased that Sarah made the journey over for the day from Sheffield University – fortunately there was a station just a mile away.
