West Yorkshire League Race Three: Junior Report

  • by

West Park, Leeds, the venue for the third race in the League, brought back memories of the famous Aaron Memorial races, once one of the most prestigious events in the North of England. The weather was very mild, and, although there were muddy sections, conditions underfoot were better than in the first two races.

Twenty two of our runners took part, our lowest total so far,  though once again we were (just!) represented in every race. Four age-groups managed to have scoring teams :  the U11 Boys were 7th, the U13 Boys 8th, the U13 Girls 8th, and the U15 Boys 9th.

Several of our runners were somewhat under the weather on the day, and some of our “regulars” were missing,  but there were some very encouraging performances : in the U11 Girls Ruby Firth, on her debut, had a fine run, and it is a great pity that she had no team-mates to support her ; in the U13 Girls Lucy Miller produced her best performance; in the U13 Boys Jack Bradley showed a big improvement ; in the U15 Boys Max Duckett once again impressed, and Matthew Merrick showed he is getting back to his best ; our two U17 runners, Sarah Dewhirst and Daniel Smithurst, showed commendable determination in their prospective races.
