Gold for ladies at the British Masters Road Relay Championships, Sutton Coldfield, Sat 18th May 2013

  • by

Two teams made the trip to Sutton Coldfield to the British Masters Athletics Association (BMAF) Road Relay Championships at Sutton Coldfield on Sat 18th May 2013. It was cool and breezy but we had escaped the rain. Mary Green lead the V55 Ladies out with a storming run (20.00ms) round the 3 mile undulating course. She did admit that going out in front up the first climb was probably not the most sensible thing she has ever done but she managed to recover and hold a strong pace all the way round.

With a good 2 minute lead established Sue Cariss (22.46) and Becky Weight (21.49) were able to hold onto enough to give us a winning time of 1h04m35s, a margin of 40s over nearest rivals Cannock & Stafford, and the gold medals. Mary Green got a second gold medal as the fastest V55 lady beating her nearest rival by over 40s. We celebrated with chocolate cake (the whole cake!) and coffee – it was only a small cake!

The M65 Bingley team at Sutton Park were placed 4th against strong competition over the same 3 mile course. Oxford City were clear winners with runs of 19m-31, 19m-31 and 18m-50, total time 57m-42s. Elswick 2nd with 60m-4s, Trentham 3rd 60m-44s with Bingley 4th 62m-5s. Peter Ellerton ran 21m-22, Fred Gibbs 20m-24 and Les Haynes 20m-19. 14 full teams competed. Thankyou to Peter Ellerton for writing this section.
