Mens Track and Field Report

  • by

Track & Field Northern league Mens team report. We are now in the East Central division 3, the opening match was at Doncaster and for a change the conditions were reasonable for most of the events although the wind did affect the distance performances but it was good to see and feel the sun after such a miserable winter.

We welcomed for the first time Emile Cairess and Jacob Gill who have progressed well through the juniors and also new member Tom Clough, they made a real contribution to the results and we hope that they enjoyed their first outing with us and continue their enjoyment in athletics. Tom originally came as a spectator moved on to assisting officials and after 2 weeks training decided to have a go at competing which must be regarded as a success story for his coach and club.

With help from 2 juniors Emile and James, along with Lee Athersmith we were able to fill both middle distance events, it’s a long time since we managed that, this of course left us short for the chase but Chris Edwin filled in for Lee but no B string. Stephen Broadbent recovering from his previous weekends 10K won the 5K , although Stephen Bailey who was leading the B string and looking strong picked up an injury and could not finish.

The most outstanding performance of the day came from Demetric Nelson who ran the 100mtr in 10.7secs breaking the club record which had stood for 38 years, well done and congratulations from all the team. Demetric then went on to win the 200 mts, and 400 mts and also be part of both relays of which we were a close 2nd in the 100 and won the 400, the 400 team started with 2 middle distance runners volunteering to start the race leaving the experience of Oliver Robinson and Demetric to take over theĀ batonĀ and show how to win a race from behind, this typified the team spirit of the day and ended an exciting and enjoyable meeting Although we are still unable to fill all the events we had lots of positive reaction and all the team can look forward to our next meeting.
