Ladies success at the Windmill Whizz – you have to be ‘in it to Whizz it’

Windmill Whizz Fell Race 9 Mar 2013 11.3km, 244m. For those not Haworth Hobbling, Intercounty Cross Countrying, or Park Running today (well done all – looks like some great results coming through) there was Alan Greenwood’s Windmill Whizz – Fell Race for Life from Ogden Reservoir.

The early morning drizzle had turned to light sleety snow by the time the 80 or so runners lined up for the start and the recent rain had refreshed the path puddles and streams that were just starting to dry out a little. 6 Bingley Harriers were in the field. We were told to keep the windmills on our left but we never saw them with low cloud and blowing snow limiting the views. Richard Thackrey was our first finisher (13th, 44.17) despite a fall and damages. Ruth Whitehead was next home (24th, 50.16) and was 2nd Lady and 1st FV40. Harry Atkinson (31st , 53.12) and Gordon Kaye (62nd, 71.21) were our V60 reps and Mary Webb and Becky Weight came in together (59th & 60th – both 64.54). Mary had a fall also having survived the rough section relaxed a little on a road section and took a pot-hole tumble, twisting her foot and clattering knee, hip and shoulder. Despite all that we (Ruth, Mary & myself) took the ladies team prize and brought home a box of chocolates each, and enjoyed the chip butties in the Causeway pub after.
