Bingley Show 10k Trail Race Results and Race Report 2019

Race Report

This year’s race saw 85 runners start in humid conditions with a loop of the Show Arena and then out into the Bingley St Ives Estate for the same scenic trail 10k course as last year.

To add to the excitement, a fire engine decided to go up and down Altar Lane doing some training manoeuvres, meeting the runners head-on, part-way up their first climb. Luckily there were no collisions (and no fire!) so all worked out fine.

This year’s surprise race winner admitted to being “not a runner” – he was actually a Show Jumper who was having a rest from show jumping that day and decided to do the race! Well done to Joe Whitaker, international show-jumper, who won the men’s race in 46min 59sec, collecting the winning race vest and Wiggle vouchers. Second and third men, Gary Rowling of Queensbury and Michael King of Halifax were less than a minute behind, closely followed by Bingley Harriers youngster, 16 year-old Joe Carnelley who took the U23 prize.

First lady was Bingley Harrier Ruth Thackray in 51min 15sec collecting the specially designed winner’s vest, Wiggle vouchers and a Bingley Physiotherapy Practice free massage voucher.

This year’s race was an emotional one due to the sad passing of Phil Hawkswell, the race director for the previous 3 years. In his memory a special “Phil Hawkswell Trophy” was made and donated by Lighthouse Garden Designers for the person getting nearest to his personal best time of 1h 05min 42sec. This was won by Caroline Glover of Wharfedale Harriers.

This year every runner received a commemorative drinks bottle donated by TwentyTwenty Films and the Mortgage Advice Bureau. Wiggle vouchers, winners vests and a ladies sports massage were kindly donated by Radio Design, Veloart and Bingley Physiotherapy Practice. In addition a further £280 in Sportsshoes vouchers were given out in prizes.

The course is extensively marked to allow trouble free running, with a total of 42 marshals and volunteers and we are extremely grateful to our extremely enthusiastic team, many who help year after year and without whom the race couldn’t exist.
