The West Yorkshire Sports Hall Athletics Trials were held at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre to make use of the excellent facilities and much improved spectator viewing. Over 150 Boys and Girls from all over West Yorkshire competed to gain selection for the West Yorkshire teams to go to the Yorkshire Regional finals in Halifax on Sunday 2nd March. At the championship new records were set in 2 Track events and 1 Field event.

The event was the 3rd competition held at Richard Dunn Sports Centre in the last two months and it proved to a quieter affair than the previous two Under 11 matches. The older athletes seem to concentrate on the job in hand, to try and gain a place in the West Yorkshire Team to go forward to the Yorkshire Regional final.

In the Under 13 Girls competition Lauren Powell from Kirkburton Middle School showed she was in contention setting a new record in the 2 Lap race in 25.00sec and also equalling the record in the Standing Triple Jump with a jump of 6.54m and winning the obstacle time trial.  India Wilson from Leeds City won the 6 Lap final but also featured in the 2 Lap and 4 Lap finals as well as 2nd in the Obstacle time trial. Joanna Snook out jumped everyone win a leap of 2.30m in the Standing Long Jump.

 In the Under 13 Boys Gypsy Black from King James School in Huddersfield set a new 2 lap record of 23.70secas well as winning the Standing Triple jump 7.26m and the Shot with a put of 10.09m.Ayton Aldridge of South Craven won the High Jump 1.30m and also the Vertical Jump with 63cm.

In the Under 15 Girls Phillipa Medley of Bradford GS had a hat trick of wins in the 2 Lap, Standing Long Jump and Shot Put. Jessica Mayho of Parkside won the 4 Lap race. In the Under 15 Boys Jason Taylor from Hipperholme & Lightcliffe School won the 2 Lap race. In the past the take up of Under 15’s has been poor but with 27 Boys and 24 Girls this was very encouraging.

The teams to represent West Yorkshire in the Regional final in Halifax on 2nd March have been selected on an all round basis and letters are on their way. In the regional competition each athlete has to compete in 3 categories of events so this means that some athletes who might have won individual events at the trials have not shown the all round ability to fill the team places, so may be disappointed.

It does seem encouraging that the Under 15’s numbers taking part have improved but there is room for more taking part in Athletics at Club Level and School level in the West Yorkshire area. If there are any 12, 13, 14, 15 year olds available to take part in athletics events, whether this is Sportshall Athletics, Track & Field, Cross Country or Fell racing that fancy trying athletics, then give us a call and we can point you to the nearest club. Training with an Athletics Club does include the training and conditioning to improve for competitions, which can be local or County, North of England or National. Athletics does have something for everyone, whether it is long distance, Short Sprints, Jumps, Throws, or a combination. It caters for all ages from around 8 and for all abilities who aim to improve there own personal best performance.
