Three of the four West Yorkshire Sportshall Athletics teams had an excellent day at the recent Yorkshire finals qualifying for the trip to Birmingham to the Aviva Sportshall UK Finals at the LG Arena at the NEC. The UK finals certainly prove to be an eye opener to some of our athletes with the scale of the competition and the best of the best all looking to win medals. To win any medal at these championships is a proud achievement.

All four West Yorkshire Sportshall Athletics teams having a clean sweep in the Yorkshire finals and the Under 15 Boys individual Champion Issa Muvunyi (Bingley Harriers) travelled to Birmingham to the Aviva Sportshall UK Finals at the LG Arena in Birmingham.
The event at the NEC started with its usual pomp and ceremony with the impressive parade and terrific atmosphere, and soon after the start things were looking good for the West Yorkshire Teams. As the competition unfolded West Yorkshire took gold in the Under 13 Boys 4 - 2 Lap sprint final (Aaron Kettlewell, Greg Moreno, Patrick Thackray and James Abbott (Bingley Harriers)) with Abishaia Blair winning individual gold in the 2 Lap final. In the Under 13 Girls Rebekah Tiler (Bingley Harriers) for the second year in succession took gold in the vertical jump and then went on take silver with team mates Hannah Walker, Sinead Rajput and Caroline Johnson in the 4x2 Lap relay. Beth Thomas, also in the Under 13 Girls, took a bronze medal in the Shot Putt. In the Under 15 Girls Kate Wasyliw took the gold in the 2 Lap final. We had a total of 12 National medals which is West Yorkshire’s second highest tally which is a fine achievement in such top class competition. The team competitions results were :- Under 13 Girls winners Cheshire, West Yorkshire 5th Under 13 Boys winners Avon, West Yorkshire 5th Under 15 Girls winners Birmingham, West Yorkshire 5th Under 15 Boys winners Channel Islands , West Yorkshire 9th All round it was an excellent team performance from West Yorkshire teams with 12 teams contesting the competitions with teams from all over the UK. To have three teams in 5th place is one of our best achievements, the Under 15 Boys had a few drop out and were a man short on the day but still had some notable individual performances.
