What's New...

Hi there and welcome to my pawsome Spring 08 newsletter. We have nearly come to the end of the winter season of Cross Country & Sports Hall Athletics and look forward to the summer season of Fell Running & Track & Field Athletics. We have had some excellent results in the winter with many of you winning medals and being selected to represent your City and County. Please make sure you make a note in your diary of the Bob Smith Junior Race that will be held on Thursday 1st May in Bingley – an event not to be missed. My main event of the year is the 2008 Mascot Gold Cup Steeplechase race at Wetherby on Sunday 27th April – if you are not competing that day perhaps you would like to come along and give me a cheer with the hope that I can retain the ‘Champion Doggie’ title again! Last year it was the biggest Mascot Race in the ‘World’ and I really do want to beat those professional mascots again! – eg…… Bullman, Ronnie the Rhino and Lucas from Leeds United. I hope the summer season is just as successful as the winter season. Keep Running, Jumping and Throwing with the Young Hounds because we’re the best! Enjoy your athletics – I do.

In the early months of 1991 an idea was born at a RAF Cosford Indoor Athletics meeting. Many Bingley Harriers both junior and senior were competing and during one of the breaks a discussion took place. The outcome was the suggestion that Bingley Harriers should have an indoor (Sportshall Athletics) Pulton Cup. An anonymous sponsor donated the trophy and the event was born. Each athlete competes in running, jumping and throwing and the total points scored are then calculated to give age group winners and an overall winner. The inaugural winner of the competition was none other than Joanne Oates who is still competing for the club. There was a new trophy added in 1993 to cater for the under 9's and Under 11's, consequently there are now 2 trophies to be contested each spring. The competition is still enthusiastically attended and long may it remain.
