So the second Bob Smith Handicap at
St Ives, went ahead after all. It was said after last years
event, what a good venue and course it was, and I for one was
very glad when foot & mouth restrictions were relaxed enabling
the event to go ahead. The task of engineering 61 runners, aged
between 11 and 53, to cross the line in the space of ten minutes,
is not an easy one and my thanks go to Derek Green who has the
unenviable, and almost impossible, task of handicapping the
juniors. This year we were pleased to welcome as guests, our
fellow competitors from Keighley and Craven AC, who are obviously
missing the usual regular outings to off road events as we are.
I believe it would be good to participate in occasional club
events together on a regular basis. And so to the race, well
I make no apologies for allowing our President, Graham Smith,
what was obviously too lenient a handicap. Graham last turned
out in a club race over a year ago and came near last. Since
then apparently he has been in secret training, hiding behind
the mantle of his presidential facade in preparation for this
occasion. Well done Graham. It was fitting that Michael Smith
should work his way into second place, thus taking an award
in the event of his grandfathers name. Ian Holmes recorded the
fastest time of the day from a severe handicap.
Pete Jebb.
