Bingley Ladies (a few guys and some juniors as well!) on the Fells and Off-Road – Summer 2019

Dave Stephenson has been busy keeping the Fell Championship results up to date – thanks Dave.  See https://www.bingleyharriers.co.uk/club-championships/fell-championships/.

Here is a selection of ladies Summer activity (and some missed from the Spring report).  Bingley Harriers Fell Championship Races marked with an asterisk*.  My photos unless otherwise stated.

I did a couple of reports for Eldwick Gala Fell Race, a Bingley Harriers race for which I am Race Organiser; one for the race and results and one about organising and the team. So grab a cuppa, settle down to read this and then go to the website and enjoy Eldwick from all sides :

Denise Wright, Ian Holmes and Victoria Wilkinson ran this tough race packed with steep climbs.  For Victoria this was in the run up to the Three Peaks on 28 April, a qualifying event for a National Mountain Running place.  Victoria was the 1st lady, first Bingley finisher in 2.45, and 21st overall in a field of over 300 runners.  Ian ran 2.47 and Denise 4.17.

Bunny Runs CS 3.0m, 300ft, Tuesdays, April 2019

The popular Penistone Hill Bunny Runs and Relay, now organised by Wharfedale, saw nearly 30 Bingley runners in action.  With a minimum age of 12 (or 10 for the shorter Relays) there is lots of scope for juniors, seniors and veterans to try out their fell legs.   Tim Midgley lead the Bingley crowd home in all three races, with Alex Flaherty, fighting for top BU17 spot, and Theo Clay (1st BU15 for the series) close on his heels.  GU15 friends Rebecca Flaherty and Martha Jackson were having their usual tussel, joined by Ruby Firth who got 1st GU17 in Bunny 2.  Recently back in a Bingley vest Pauline Munro picked up 1FV50 in Bunny 1, and Sarah Flaherty was closing in on the top LV40 spot.  Peter Ellerton took the 1MV70 for the series.  Martha, Rebecca and Sarah took the Ladies team prize for Bunny 3

* Great Lakes Run AL 21km, 2130m Sat 15 Jun 2019

A serious Lakeland outing so I took a back seat on encouraging people to do this one – if anyone especially wanted to do it I would help them prepare but no persuasion.   Denise and I had a great recce a week or so before on a beautiful sunny day with great visibility with a couple of other running friends – but a long, long day out.  On race day just three Bingley Harriers amongst over 300 starters – as an English, British and Bingley (!) Fell Championship counter there was a big field.

Position Name Category Race time
87 Tom Gomersall MSEN 3.29.37
230 Becky Weight W60 4.29.20
282 Denise Wright W45 5.07.15

My lesson for the day was to make sure I recce the route in full even if the visibility is perfect  and you think you can see exactly where you should go.  On our recce we had skipped Great End summit cutting across to the south of it as it looked straightforward.  On race day it was raining at the start of the race and once up on Esk Pike, beyond Bow Fell, we were in the clouds and the stream of runners had spread out and were choosing different routes approaching Great End.  I suddenly  found myself alone somewhere towards the top of Great End, in a relatively featureless pathless rocky area with very little visibility,  not really knowing exactly where I was or which direction I was heading and whether or not I had already passed the check point (without going to it!).   I pulled up not wanting to get any further off route, if I was off route, and consulted my map, watch (time only – not allowed GPS type navigation aids!) and compass.  After a few minutes some runners appeared coming down towards me, having been to the checkpoint on the summit.  I had missed swinging round to the north to the summit on the way up – not obvious from the map but something I would have known I needed to do had I not shortcut the recce. I headed back up to the summit checkpoint which I had passed below without realising.  Not disastrous this time and not too much time lost and fortunately I still got 1FV60, but it gave me a wakeup call to be more careful in future.

I would also like to say a huge thanks to Denise for a) running the race despite reservations (I think she enjoyed it in retrospect) and  b) for driving at the last minute when I managed to fill my diesel car with petrol (a first for me!) at 7.30 in the morning on the way to pick her up.  It was a long and expensive day by the time I drove my car, freshly filled with diesel, home.

Calderdale Way Relay 19 May 2019

A long distance ~50miles fell relay split into 6 legs and run in pairs around the Calder Valley.  Bingley haven’t put teams in for a few years partly because, since it moved from its early December date, it now falls in a very busy running time of year and only 4 or 5 weeks away from the Bradford Millennium Way Relay.  But it is a great team event and this year a group decided to see if they could get a mixed team together and refresh their knowledge of the legs (or learn anew!), and enjoy the delights of climbing up and down out of Calderdale and surrounding valleys and over various field and moorland tops in their early summer plumage.

100 teams made the start line including 21 Mixed teams (6 Men 6 Ladies).  The Bingley team were second Mixed team after Ribble Valley Mixed (5th overall, 6.25).  Well done all.

Blackfell AM 14km, 700m Sat 6 Jul

Our own (Bingley Harriers) race and an English and Yorkshire Fell Championship Race this year so it was all hands to the pump organising and supporting for the expected large entry.  Fortunately enough helpers stepped forward so a number of Bingley were able to run.  I did not include the race in our own club championship so that we didn’t create an internal conflict for individual runners between gaining championship points and helping out.

A beautiful sunny weekend at Kettlewell with a quality field of 276 runners lined up for their climb over Great Whernside and back.  Tom Adams (Ilkley, 1.14) and Kelli Roberts (Helm Hill, 1.27) set new Male and Female records;  a combination of national competition,  good conditions on the day, and the extra recce footfall  prior to the day had created some ‘trods’ across some long tussocky stretches mean those records could stand for a good while.

Part of the Senior and Junior Fell Championships, on the doorstep, linked to a summer village gala, and a fine dry day – what more is there to like.  And, as a Short fell race, it can allow older juniors to race against the seniors which is always popular and some of our younger runners made the most of the opportunity with Alex and Rebecca Flaherty leading the Bingley men and women home and taking the 1st Junior spots.  Alex was closely followed by Tim & Theo, the Bunny run team.

Washburn Valley Relays Fri 19 Jul 2019

Three different legs on mainly on paths and trails  in the Washburn Valley around the scenic Fewston and Swinsty reservoirs with a Junior relay too.  With a limit of 60 senior teams there was a good turnout with 55 on the start line.  All the Bingley teams were entered as Mixed and Bingley A – Alex, Tim & Jo – were 9th overall and  3rd Mixed team.   In the way of team events the Bingley Mixed team ended up being all ladies – Nicky, Sarah and Mari – so would have been 3rd Ladies team.

*Bingley Show BM 10.6km, 304m Sat 20 Jul 2019

Bingley Show was brought into the Fell Championship when an earlier race at Boulsworth was cancelled due to access restrictions.  19 Bingley Harriers on the start line all vying for the custom designed winners vests (courtesy of Bill Belcher) and water bottles (thanks to local sponsors Twenty Twenty Films, the Bingley Physiotherapy Practice, Radio Design and Mortgage Advice Bureau).

For the ladies Ruth Thackray, Jo Buckley and Shona picked up the first three places.  Vicky Omelianowicz came in next on less than fresh legs having raced the evening before at the Washburn Valley Relays, with myself, Becky Weight and Jo Henry completing the ladies running ‘team’.  Of course being our own race there was a bigger organising and helping team in attendance – many thanks to all those on duty so we could run. As a Bingley Harriers race the full results and more is on the website page https://www.bingleyharriers.co.uk/events/bingley-show-trail-race

And the surprise results are always great to see – winner of the mens race was Jo Whitaker (Unattached) who admitted that normally his Bingley Show was spent on horseback in the show ring but that he had always fancied giving the race a go.  This year was his opportunity as he didn’t have a horse to ride.  He was of course invited to give Bingley Harriers a try but he doesn’t live locally although he commutes daily to work at Harvey Smith’s stables above Eldwick.

The same day as Borrowdale (and Hellifield !) and not an English Championship race this year but still 99 runners, a fantastic campsite, and a lovely summer day in the beautiful remote Duddon valley in the Lakes.  This was a camping and BBQ weekend too and several members, families & friends camped and along with other runners staying over there was a great atmosphere for the weekend.

The race was won by John Heneghan (P&B) in 1.37 and Ailish Graham (Wharfedale) in 1.49.  Despite good weather and visibility some of our Bingley runners had navigation challenges on the route and finding the checkpoints.  Joanne & I had done a refresher recce a week or so earlier and were happy with our route choices so I will leave it your imagination as to who ‘got lost’ 😉

4 sets of Bingley junior siblings – Jebbs (Thomas & Isabelle), Temples (Daniel & Elouise), Mantles (Seb and Samuel), and Flahertys (Rebecca and Alex) ensured there were Bingley vests in nearly all the junior races with 1sts for Thomas (U9B) and Alex (U19M) and a 2nd for Rebecca (U15G).

Kilnsey Show (BOFRA) 1m 350’ Tue 27 Aug 2019

They don’t come much shorter and sharper than this, and a midweek village show, even if it is the Tuesday after August Bank holiday, means not everybody can make it.  Nevertheless a few Bingley Harriers decided to dash.  In the senior race, won by Nick Swinburn of Northumberland FR in 7.53, Jason Feeney (11.37), and Josh (13.21) and Paul Spencer (15.35) were amongst the 100 runners in the scree dash.

In the Junior races Martha Jackson was 2nd U14 Girl and Seth Lineacre ran in the U12 race

Have I missed a race you did?  Let me know and perhaps write a few lines about it for the next report.  Thanks, Becky Weight.  Ladies Fell Team Manager
