Ladies – Fellsman, Bunny Relays, Spring Handicap, 3 Peaks, Bluebell, Up the Nab, Vic for GB & Jack Bloor

This is about Ladies Fell, XC and Off-Road activity. I am aiming to do regular reports for general interest and the Committee. If I have missed your race or didn’t spot you in the the results  drop me a few lines about it and your results to include in the next one.  I have included some references to the older junior ladies also as they are starting to join senior teams when the opportunity arises;  their full results will be reported elsewhere.   Becky Weight – Ladies Fell Manager.

Fellsman 16 & 17 April 2016  61miles 11,000’ ascent

The Fellsman is a long distance walk event in the Yorkshire Dales for walkers and runners starting at Ingleton, heading to north to Dent via Ingleborough and Whernside, then east over several fells to Buckden Pike, then south to Grassington.    Alison Barrett set off with support from Neil, who had to withdraw due to injury, and recorded the following times at various checkpoints  : Ingleton 8.30, Hill Inn 10.43, Kingsdale 13.01, Dent 16.04, Stonehouse 19.11, Redshaw 21.45, FleetMoss 01.10, Cray  06.40.   That feels like at least 40miles to me in 22 hours – well done Alison.  I don’t know what the weather was like that weekend and am not clear what happened next. I know the event was moved forward a couple of weeks to avoid clashes with other events so there would be less daylight.  Alison – send me a few lines to tell us about your experience

But I couldn’t help including a little more  –  Vic, Ruth and Lesley were all really chuffed and surprised (as were all of us!) to get the Yorkshire Championship  and event ladies team prize.   Dave Woodhead’s photo says it all :

3 Peaks Yorkshire champs gold medal team Bingley Victoria Wilkinson, Ruth Whitehead  and Lesley Watson

Lesley commented ‘It’s absolutely awesome to run the 3 Peaks, Then to win 2 team prizes, just tops the day off! Well done girls😀

Stephen Fry  commented ‘Brilliant….Well done to all. Fantastic win for Vic, unbelievable run from Ruth so soon after having the baby, and superb run by Lesley knock 50 minutes of her time from last year….must be the training plan! ‘

To which Ruth responded : ‘Thank you, I enjoyed it but a bit stiff today x’.   Ruth even clipped 3 minutes off her 2014 time.  Ruth back in action – photo by D Woodhead.

431 runners including 190 ladies,  Rebecca Milne of Stainland Lions was first lady in 85.50 (65th overall).  Ben Mounsey (SL) won the race in 61.10 – he admitted to doing hill reps (10 at a time!)  on Trooper Lane – the steep cobbled climb up Beacon Hill out of Halifax.  And it finishes with a river crossing!

Up the Nab Fell Race AS 4.5ms  Ascent – a lot!  Sat 7 May

The exact route for Up the Nab (Whitley Nab near Charlesworth, Glossop, N Derbyshire) remained a mystery until the day.  One map and description suggested a long steady climb from the start, a descent off the back of the Nab and small loop back up to the top and then bowl back down to the start.  It was a fib.  At least 5 substantial ascents including a couple steep enough for all fours for some made it feel like the longest 4.5ms I’ve done in good while.    But a sunny day with a light breeze, running with no kit, and well marked and marshalled made it a real pleasure.  It was a mixture of private land, footpath and open rough pasture and moorland between Charlesworth and Glossop.  Charlesworth, on the edge of the Dark Peak with rocky gritstone edges and a finger of dark heathery moorland leading invitingly to Kinder Scout and beyond, is where I was brought up so quite familiar and doubly interesting for me to see places from my childhood from a different perspective.

Back to the race – great to get a team out again for the second English Fell Championship (EFC) race.  The Ladies race went off at midday with just over 100 runners on the start line.  Only a week after the Three Peaks many results spoke of who had raced at the Three Peaks and not.  Victoria, with the Peaks in her legs, was second by 1.5mins to Heidi Dent (Howgill Harriers) having beaten her at Black Combe in March – a strong competiton to watch.  Lesley said she felt she was ‘running but not going forward’.  There were similar comments from others who had been at the 3Ps.  Denise stopped to help a girl who had fallen and initially thought she had broken her ankle.   I had a clear run tusselling with some of my age category competitors notably Wendy Dodds (actually a V65!) – maybe if she had not done the 3Ps I wouldn’t have beaten her!

As a team, if I have counted the results correctly, we were 10th which will add a point in the EFC series, where we were lying 8th after Black Combe.   The team championship is based on the best four of the series (6), with at least one short, medium and long, and different runners can run in each event.   As the season progresses other teams will come into the competition so we may not hold our place but great to see us listed ;-).   If you would like to support the team in one of the championship races just let me know.  As a ‘short’ race this was open to over 16’s but it clashed with Hawkswick which was an English and Yorkshire Junior Championship event which was the priority for our young ladies.  I haven’t heard much about it yet but the Woodentops photos show me it was a beautiful day for Evie Trusselle (U8), Eliza Findlay, Katie Smith and Lucy Miller (U16s) and Victoria Merrick (U18).

Victoria Wilkinson gains GB selection for World long distance mountain running championships in Slovenia 18th June 2016

Thanks to Ruth Whitehead for picking this up, and as reported in Athletics Weekly.

‘Congratulations to Vic on winning the trial race (3 Peaks) and GB selection for the world long distance mountain running champs which takes place in Slovenia on 18th June.’   Photo courtesy of Sport Sunday and Inov’s sponsorship of the 3 Peaks race.
