The race was organised to run on a Thursday evening on the St Ives estate at 7.00pm. It has been otherwise known as the Spring Handicap but on the day might have been the Winter Handicap 2 ! The course had been slightly adjusted to allow both the junior and senior courses to share the same start and finishes and thanks to Martin Peace`s canny handicapping there was a good bunching or runners together at the end. The advertised course was changed about an hour before the start to minimise contact with some curious calves but the overall length and ascents were essentially unaffected so the change may well become a permanent one.
Horizontal driving hail delayed the start by some minutes but 28 stalwart Harriers eventually followed the two courses – blue for senior and orange for junior . A couple of adults opted to join the junior route so maybe we should just refer to blue and orange routes in the future?
Many many thanks to the marshalls without whom no event could ever happen, Sue Hall, Jo Sutcliffe,Tony Kingham, Richard Holmes, Bruce Duncan and from the Harriers and three local volunteers Chris and Christine Day and Sam Oddie . Also thanks to Martin Peace for the handicapping and registrations and John Capenerhurst and Tony Pickles for a brilliant job with the timekeeping.
And to cap it all there was still time for those who so wished to repair down to the B&BSC for a brief prizegiving and some food and drink.
All in all a success, thanks to all whose advice contributed to the new course and timing and let`s hope for an even bigger event next year.
