Ladies Fell, XC and Off Road report Mar 16

This is about Ladies Fell, XC and Off-Road activity. I am aiming to do regular reports for general interest and the Committee. If I have missed your race or didn’t spot you in the the results  drop me a few lines about it and your results to include in the next one.  I have included some references to the older junior ladies also as they are starting to join senior teams when the opportunity arises;  their full results will be reported elsewhere.   Becky Weight – Ladies Fell Manager.

Rombalds Stride Sat 6 Feb 2016 Long Distance Walk 23ms

Long distance walks have fantastic food stops and lots of runners run them.  Starting in Guiseley, it takes in some of Yorkshire’s finest scenery, up the Airedale Valley, over Rombalds Moor to Ilkley and across Otley Chevin.  The website says  first Sat of Feb for 2017.  For Bingley ladies Rachael Sharples finished just behind fell running  legend Wendy Dodds,  Alison & Neil  Barrett shared the day, as did Eleanor Kitchen with mum Diane.  Averaging ~ 4m/hr there was clearly some running going on ;-).

There were  580 starters / 402 finshers / first lady 3.23 Rebecca Cesar de Sa

132 Rachael Sharples  4.41

206 Alison Barrett 5.45

207 Neil Barrett 5.45

236 Diane Kitchen 6.06

238 Eleanor Kitchen 6.06

Windy Hill Fell Race 13 Feb 2016 BM 9ms 1218’

I had a ‘free’ weekend and wanted a ‘longer run to work hard on’  so decided at the last minute to head over to Windy Hill. Early morning snow around Denholme made the journey exciting but it was clear on the other side of the Pennines at Littleborough.  The website description tells of :

Beginning at Littleborough RUFC above Hollingworth Lake, it starts with a fast paced, undulating run to  Draught Hill before being met with the memorable climb, up the Roman road.  At the top, you are met with Pennine Way rock and  stunning scenery. Now the fun part… A steady, fast paced 4-5 mile downhill on a rollercoaster-esque trail to the finish.

A reasonable description – I would add an open route with quite a lot on hard tracks, ‘fast paced downhill’ limited a little by muddy areas, and route finding easy with marshals at key junctions.

206 ran the race which was won by Ben Mounsey  CVFR  56.36 and for ladies by Heidi Dent, Howgill Harriers,  16th overall, 67.14.  My result was :

124, 12/41F, 1FV55 Becky Weight 1:26:18.2

Ilkley Moor Fell Race  Sun 21 Feb 2016 AS, 8km, 401m

Challenging, technical and popular enough for pre-entry only.   On the day it was very windy, mild, and muddy with a strong headwind along the top.   Sue Fulton worked hard against the wind.  MC enjoyed racing in and was very impressed with her new ‘mud-claws’ – gave her new grip and confidence in the mud and on steep slopes.   For Denise the steep muddy descents towards the end were especially challenging.

315 runners, including 66 ladies led home by two youngsters Bronwen Jenkinson (U23, 51.11) and Jemima Elgood (U18, 52.36). The wind & mud ensured no records were broken.

Baildon Boundary Way (trail, half marathon) recces – Feb 16

Sue Fulton and Ann Marie Roper recced the new route post- flood route for the BBWay –

Several ladies are entered so looking forward to a good team day out.

National Cross Country Championships 2016; 27th Feb Donington Park

The ladies team didn’t make this due to last minute illness and injury (some not running related!)   for runners and children.  Alana Gill flew the flag for Bingley ladies running in the ladies race.  It must have been a fantastic race with 700 ladies running , 84 full teams, and many more clubs represented.  Well done Alana.

Midgeley Moor Sat 27th Feb  2016 AS  5 miles (8.04km) / 1250ft (381m)

A short local fell race, great to sharpen your legs up, and the first of the Bingley Fell Championship races (upto your best 8 races out of 13 –   see the Bingley website  https://www.bingleyharriers.co.uk/club-championships/fell-championships/  )

A few days dry weather and a dry day for the race meant the sometimes boggy topped run was reasonably runnable.  Yes you did get wet feet but they weren’t in water all the time ;-).   103 runners turned up and for your £4 entry (proceeds to charity) you got a pair of socks, a map, and a pint of milk at the end.  What is there not to like.

First lady home was  – 17 (lady 1) Bronwen Jenkinson Eryri Harriers LU23 0:46:59 26

66 (lady 11) Becky Weight Bingley Harriers LV50 0:56:45 68

Peter Ellerton, pipped me at the post – as I ran carefully (protecting my twist prone feet) down the soft but steep and cow poddled, finishing field – and I thought he was a gentleman ;-),  and Phil Hawkswell tusselled with a crowd of V50,60 & 70 ladies and gents

High Cup Nick Fell Race – Sat 27th Feb 2016 BM 15 Km 460m

In the women’s race, Victoria Wilkinson took nearly 3 minutes off her own course record, finishing 1st woman & 17th overall in somewhere around 1.07 (I can’t find the full results).  Ricky Lightfoot was  1st in 1.00.01, 2nd Tom Addison of Helm Hill 1.00.07, 3rd Rob Hope, Pudsey & Bramley 1.01.04.  As I can’t find the full results I don’t know if there were any other Bingley runners.

Harewood House Half Marathon  Sun 28th Feb 2016 Offroad

Second year (I think) for this off –road HM on paths, trails and fields around the rolling / hilly Harewood House Estate – run by the British Heart Foundation.  A sunny day for Ellie Kitchen, Vicky Omelianowicz, and new lady, Natalie Madgett.  Also Natalie’s first off-road run – in borrowed trail shoes – thanks to Becky Holmes 😉 with a target of under 2 hours.

Great results for our three ladies all in the top third of almost 1000 runners and the top 15% of the ladies (433). (PS Website results are slightly different to on the day reports)

128,  Ellie Kitchen, 1.43.29,  8th lady

Ultra-distance preparation and race recces  Feb 16

Kate Farley   “Today’s potter was 34 I think Rachel hill. I managed to consume a massive 600 calories…!”  The bigger success appeared to be that Kate managed to keep the 600 calories down. 😉

Mon 29th Feb – Denise Wright, Lesley Watson, Becky Weight and Annie from Wharfedale drove (thanks Denise) to the south-west corner of the Lakes to recce Black Combe.   A good day and a good recce. Cold on the very top where a ‘freezing cloud’ was forming delicate feathered frost on the grass, but otherwise we had good visibility and running conditions.   Denise’s child hood memories of holidaying at Silecroft just between Black Combe and the coast, and more recently having run Black Combe served us well travelling and race route navigating.  Two big climbs and descents – one very steep gave us a good workout and was great prep for the race in more ways than one.  I for one definitely had ‘downhill thighs’ after.

Northern Masters Cross Country – Warrington – Sun 6 Mar

‎Thanks to Peter Ellerton‎ for his Facebook post including Sue Becconsall
We managed to get an M65 team together for the Northern Masters cross-country race at Warrington on Sunday.6 March Stuart Thompson had an outstanding run to take 1st M65, just beating last year’s winner, Eric Rannicar. As Bingley were the only team of 3, we also got the over 60 team award. All men under 70 did 4 laps (10K) All ladies and M70+ did 2 laps (5K), with Peter Covey 1st over 75 and Sue Becconsall 1st in her age group. It was cold and sunny, but the flat course had deep mud and standing water in parts.

Black Combe Fell Race Sat 12 Mar 13km 1000m

The first English Fell Championship race and a ladies team on the start line – Vic Wilkinson, Denise Wright, Becky Weight and Mandy Clarke (although MC is just moving to Knavesmire as she lives in York).   Lesley had to pull out at the last minute when Lily (Yr 4) was asked to run for Bradford Schools in the West Yorkshire School Games – she came 5th and was 2nd Bradford girl.  Lily – what a brilliant result.  Mum, and all the ladies, are so proud of you.   Back to Black Combe.  Fine drizzle,  low cloud and ~5C.  You couldn’t even see the first check point knoll – Sea Ness – never mind the top.  I was glad I had done a recent recce in good conditions – I had a strong picture of the route in my head.   With almost 500 runners, the ladies started 10 minutes in front of the men, letting us get out of the fields and up past the first check point.  The men never caught Victoria who held the lead all the way, navigated well in the mist, and came in first, setting a new ladies record, over 10 minutes in front of second placed lady Heidi Dent  (Howgill Harriers).  The mist and low cloud held and many didn’t navigate so well.   When Rob Hope (Pudsey & Bramley) and Rob Jebb (Bingley) passed Denise for the second time on the second climb, chatting together, it was clear they had been ‘walk about’ after White Combe.  And I discovered,  in the finishing funnel just behind Jo Buckley  (1.49.31), who would normally be well up the field,  that Jo had been in a group that had taken the wrong line from the last check point on South Summit of Black Combe.

Haworth Hobble fell race 12 Mar 2016  BL 51kms 1340m

32 miles of Yorkshire Pennine paths and tracks from Haworth over the moors to Calderdale, up Stoodley Pike and back to Haworth via Heptonstall and Crimsworth Dean.  The views are great, and it’s nearly all runnable apart from the climb up the Pike, provided you’ve got enough left in the tank!    Kate & Kerry enjoyed (I hope!) better conditions than at Black Combe on the same day.
