West Yorkshire League Race One: Junior Report

The opening fixture of the League once again took place at Thornes Park, Wakefield, on a rather murky day, though conditions underfoot were fine.

A total of 23 juniors took part, with a good number of them making their debut in the League, and it was an encouraging start to the season, even if we were not able to raise teams in some age-groups.

The Club had no Junior Men or Junior Women, but was represented in every other race, and we had four scoring teams: the U11 Girls came 8th, the U11 Boys 5th, the U13 Boys 6th and the U15 Girls 3rd.

Matthew Merrick’s individual victory in the U17 Men’s race was particularly impressive in view of the fact that he had a hard and very successful run the day before, and the 4th places achieved by Oliver Peace and Alex Flaherty in the U11 Boys and U13 Boys respectively were both highly pleasing, but those were not the only splendid performances as can be seen from the following:

U11 Boys:  4th Oliver Peace; 11th Jake Wallace; 26th Alistair Trusselle; 44th Waleed Raja

U11 Girls: 18th Elanor Dawson; 26th Rebecca Flaherty; 44th Lilly Smith

U13 Boys: 4th Alex Flaherty; 27th Joseph Carnelley; 40th Dylan Thornton; 42nd Joseph Childs; 45th Ben Rees

U13 Girls: 10th Grace Dawson; 19th Ruby Firth

U15 Boys: 17th Reuben Mantle

U15 Girls: 7th Lucy Miller; 14th Eliza Findlay; 24th Katie Smith; 32nd Kiran Bashir

U17 Men:  1st Matthew Merrick; 28th Jack Smith

U17 Women: 13th Vicki Merrick; 28th Abi White

Well done to all of the runners and many thanks to parents and supporters : we have a good foundation to build on for the rest of the season.
