West Yorkshire League Race Two: Junior Report

  • by

West Park, Leeds, was the venue for the second race in the League, and, after the opening fixture, where all our runners had performed so well, we were all looking forward to seeing that continue: we were not disappointed!

A total of 26 Juniors took part, with three of them making their debut for the Club. We were represented in every race, and had three scoring teams: the U11 Girls came 8th, the U11 Boys 3rd, and the U15 Girls 1st, with another thoroughly dominant performance.

Once again the U11 Boys set the ball rolling, with Alex Flaherty, on his debut, securing an impressive victory, with strong backing from his five team-mates.

Our two other newcomers, Emma Cowley and Eliza Findlay, both performed splendidly, with Emma third counter in her race, and Eliza providing valuable support to our winning U15 team, which was led home by Vicki Merrick.

Matthew Merrick, for the second time in a row, dominated the U15 Boys race, and Emile Cairess, looking for a sterner test before his run in Liverpool, finished third as a guest in the Senior Men’s race, a result which should give him enormous confidence.

Other performances that caught the eye were the 10th places achieved by Grace Dawson and Oliver Peace, the 8th place achieved by Ruby Firth, and the splendid efforts from Lucy Miller and Olivia Roper, though once again everyone that turned out did the Club proud, as can be seen from the following:

U11 Boys:  1st Alex Flaherty; 10th Oliver Peace; 20th Harry Miller; 46th Ben Rees; 52nd Callum Watson; 62nd Samuel Mantle

U11 Girls: 10th Grace Dawson; 31st Riannon Appleyard; 32nd Emma Cowley

U13 Boys: 23rd Joseph Carnelley; 58th Jack Bradley

U15 Boys: 1st Matthew Merrick; 30th Reuben Mantle

U15 Girls: 2nd Vicki Merrick; 10th Lucy Miller; 12th Olivia Roper;

18th Eliza Findlay; 20th Katie Smith; 33rd Anna Whitehead

U17 Men: 26th Tommy Thorp; 33rd Ryan Bradley

U17 Women: 22nd Abi White

U20 Women: 10th Sarah Dewhirst (58th in the joint Senior/Junior race)

U20 Men: 9th Daniel Smithurst (110th in the joint Senior/Junior race)

Great performances, great support, and great team spirit: well done everyone!
