West Yorkshire League Race One: Junior Report

  • by

The opening fixture of the League once again took place at Thornes Park, Wakefield, and once again the weather was fine throughout.

A total of 22 Juniors took part, many of them running their first ever League race, and the afternoon went as well as we could have hoped: three individual victories and one team victory were a fitting reward for a most determined overall    effort.

The Club was represented in every race, with the exception of the Junior Men, and we had four scoring teams: the U11 Boys came 5th, the U13 Boys 13th, the U17 Men 6th and the U15 Girls 1st.

The tone for the afternoon was set by the U11 Boys and after that everyone performed quite splendidly, all the way through to our only Junior Woman, Sarah Dewhirst, who had one of her best-ever runs as 6th in her age-group. The highlight of the day, however, was the thoroughly professional team victory achieved by the U15 Girls who showed that their dedicated training is paying off.

The individual victories achieved by Vicki Merrick in the U15 Girls, Matthew Merrick in the U15 Boys, and Emile Cairess in the U17 Men, were all very impressive and there were many more fine runs, as can be seen from the following:

U11 Boys:  8th Oliver Peace; 9th Harry Miller; 37th Ben Rees; 51st Callum Watson

U11 Girls: 26th Riannon Appleyard

U13 Boys: 44th Jack Bradley; 57th Dylan Thornton; 59th Joseph Childs

U13 Girls: 6th Ruby Firth; 57th Kiran Bashir

U15 Boys: 1st Matthew Merrick; 43rd Adam Thompson

U15 Girls: 1st Vicki Merrick; 6th Lucy Miller; 16th Katie Smith; 18th Olivia Roper;

35th Anna Whitehead

U17 Men: 1st Emile Cairess; 25th Tommy Thorp; 35th Ryan Bradley

U17 Women: 23rd Abi White

U20 Women: 6th Sarah Dewhirst (39th in the joint Senior/Junior race)

Well done to all of the runners, not only for their performances, but also for the way they supported each other, and many thanks to parents and supporters for their great contribution to the team effort.
