Success at the Yorkshire Veterans AA Road Relay Championships 2013 – Roberts Park, Saltaire, Sun 1st Sep 2013

  • by

Bingley had a successful day out with 2 ladies and 2 mens teams at the YVAA 2013 Road Relay Championship despite a number of people grounded with injuries. It was breezy and a little cool but a good running temperature and it stayed dry. The wind was only really noticeable while running out along Higher Coach Road – with the rest more sheltered or down wind. Our V70 men Fred, John & Les broke the previous record with Les Haynes taking the fastest leg in 18.07. The V60 men Peter, Bryan and Tony just missed third by 10 seconds. The V45 ladies Aly, Sue and Becky successfully retained Bingley’s title from last year, which was just as well as the shield was still with Mary Green who had been on holiday. Sue got the fastest leg closely followed by Aly which was a great achievement for both as they battle gluten intolerance and sacro-iliac problems respectively.

The FV35 team welcomed two new ladies to road relay competitions in Lesley Watson and Emma France. Despite initial doubts both enjoyed their race and found the event pulled out that next level of performance and helped them learn more about “racing” and how to make the best of your strengths. Ruth Whitehead made up the team having just about straightened up from mixing cement and laying paving slabs in her garden!

The team were 8th in the largest ladies category. V70 Fred Gibbs 18.58, John Smithurst 21.19, Les Haynes 18.07 V60 Peter Ellerton 19.20, Bryan Parkinson 17.38, Tony Kingham 19.26 FV45 Aly Raw 17.22, Sue Becconsall 17.19, Becky Weight 19.35 FV35 Lesley Watson 19.48, Ruth Whitehead 18.09, Emma France 24.37
