Yorkshire Vets Grand Prix 4 at Pudsey, 11 June 2013.

  • by

This event was hosted by Pudsey Pacers, with race HQ the Bankhouse Inn which has a large beer garden with stunning views over the woods and fields of the Fulneck valley. It was on the same evening as Bingley’s 5K No.2, so there were few Bingley runners.

The 4.6 mile course starts on Scholebrook Lane near Scholebrook Farm, takes in 2 hilly circuits of Black Carr Woods, followed by a steep climb up the rough Scholebrook Lane heading towards Bankhouse Inn, with a left turn at the top and a 100m flat sprint (if your legs haven’t turned to jelly) to the finish.

Black Carr Woods are notoriously boggy underfoot and have been very slippy and heavy going in the previous two years. This year it was a warm, humid evening with fields full of buttercups and bluebells still flowering in the woods and unusually dry conditions. The mass start from the farm entrance along Scholebrook Lane generated clouds of dust worthy of a wild west cattle stampede and descents of the woods were like running on rutted concrete.

213 runners competed (126 men, 71 ladies + 16 guests) and the winners were –

Gavin Mulholland, M40 Stainland Lions, 27m-49s

Margaret Sykes, F40 Holmfirth, 33m-08s

Bingley was represented by –

Paul Mitchell, 17th and 2nd M50 in 32m-07

Bryan Parkinson, 46th and 3rd M60 in 36m-34

Peter Ellerton, 55th and 1st M65 in 37m-36
