UK Sportshall Athletics Finals

  • by

Three West Yorkshire Sportshall Athletics teams having an excellent day in the Yorkshire finals to Birmingham to the Aviva Sportshall UK Finals at the LG Arena at the NEC. The finals certainly prove to be an eye opener to some with the scale of the competition and the best of the best all looking to win medals. The timing of the UK Finals in the middle of the Easter Holidays took its toll with a number of star performers away on holiday, but the reserves called in gave their best performances against the best in the country. The event at the NEC started with its usual pomp and ceremony with the impressive parade and terrific atmosphere, and soon after the start things were looking good for the West Yorkshire Teams. As the competition unfolded West Yorkshire consisting of Tobi Adeniji, Joe Dagger, Iyrwah Gooden,& Harvey Kaye took silver in the Under 13 Boys 4×1 relay with Tobi Adeniji winning Gold in the Standing Triple Jump competition. The Team finished in 8th place out of 12 teams. In the Under 13 Girls competition Abilgail Lampkin, Olivia Auker, Louise Todd and Lois Logan went gained silver in the Obstacle Relay race and the team finished in 10th place. The U15 Girls West Yorkshire team were short of medal places and finished in 11th place overall. However Lucy Oldroyd the 7th person in the team could only count in the 2 x2 lap relay but was able to compete in the Vertical jump as a non scorer but came away with a gold medal leaping 66cm. We had a total of 10 National medals which is West Yorkshires a very good tally in such top class competition. The team competitions results were :- Under 13 Girls – winners Hampshire Under 13 Boys – winners Herforshire Under 15 Girls – winners Norfolk Under 15 Boys – winners Cardiff & Vale of Glamorgan (North Yorkshire 12th) All round it was an excellent team performance from West Yorkshire teams with 12 teams contesting the competitions with teams from all over the UK. Many of these athletes are still young enough to contest next year so we can expect even better results. Alan Oates West Yorkshire Sportshall Athletics
